Anticancer Activity of Anise (Pimpinella anisum L.) Seed Extract

چکیده
Cancer incidence is much lower in India than in western countries. The reason is not fully understood, but the high spice consumption could be one of the contributing factors. Anise is one of the plants grows in India and people from our region believe that anise seeds are helpful in cancer prevention and treatment. In this study, anticancer activity of ethanol extract of anise (Pimpinella anisum L.) seed was investigated. MTT and LDH assays revealed that ethanolic extract have cytotoxic activity on human prostate cancer cell line [PC-3] at concentrations found safe to normal cells (rat skeletal muscle cell line [L6]). Treatment with anise seeds extract caused anti proliferative and apoptotic effects, with IC50 value of 400 μg/mL to cancer cells. Thus, anise could be one of the foods that attribute to cancer prevention and treatment. It could also be a natural source of novel anticancer compounds with anti proliferative and/or apoptotic properties and it is worth to work on for isolation and identification of novel anticancer drug candidates.

Diffusion method with cylinders and the broth dilution method were used for antifungal activity testing. Anise fluid extract showed antimycotic activity against Candida albicans...
متن کاملTyrosinase Inhibitors from Anise Oil
Anisaldehyde characterized in the seeds of Pimpinella anisum L. (Umbelliferae), also known as aniseed, was found to inhibit the oxidation of L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA) by mushroom tyrosinase (EC 1.14.18.1) with an ID50 of 43 μg/mL (0.32 mM). The inhibition kinetics analyzed by a Lineweaver-Burk plot established anisaldehyde to be a noncompetitive inhibitor for this oxidation. On the ...

The use of natural substances for pest control in agriculture is, economically, a viable option and has benefits for both the humanbeing and the environment, due to its low persistence and toxicity. Thus, this trial aimed on determining the insecticidal potential of the extracts and essential oils of fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill.), anise (Pimpinella anisum L.) and clove (Caryophillus aromati...
متن کاملProduction and Accumulation of Phenylpropanoids in Tissue and Organ Cultures of Pimpinella anisum
Recently we reported the comparative studies on the production and accumulation of phenylpropanoids in plants and in cell cultures of anise [1, 2]. It was shown that cell cultures did not produce anethole, the main constituent in the fruit oil of anise, but instead regularly epoxy-pseudoisoeugenol(2-methylbutyrate). We first identified this unusually substituted phenylpropanoid in the root of P...
